Suzuki Hayabusa Review & Features

Engine:

The powerful, 1,340cc, inline-four-cylinder, liquid-cooled DOHC engine has been fully revised to supply a seamless surge of torque for effortless acceleration.

The crankcase assembly hardware has been revised to increase engine durability and rigidity.
The Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material’s (SCEM) cylinder coating increases heat dissipation, durability, and ring seal.

The new, lightweight, symmetrical three-ring aluminum-alloy slipper pistons reduce the piston’s weight by 26 grams. The piston pin bores are made more durable and stronger by conical machining.

The crankshaft, like the crankcase, has been updated with new oil passages to improve lubrication in several key areas.

The combination of lighter weight crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons contributes to engine durability.

To promote more efficient and faster burning of fuel-air mixture, the Twin Swirl Combustion chamber (TSCC), has been modified in the cylinder head. This change is in addition to other valve train updates. It increases the flow coefficient by 5%, which improves combustion efficiency.

To maintain precise valve control, lightweight titanium valves are equipped with high-rate valve springs that match camshaft changes.

Individual ignition coil-caps fire iridium spark plugs in each of their cylinders. They produce complete combustion and last for longer than traditional plugs.

The Hayabusa can be modified to allow more airflow through its radiator. This increases cooling efficiency. Airflow increases by approximately 8% when the Hayabusa moves and by approximately 7% when it is cooled with the cooling fan.

A large-capacity, air-cooled oil cooler is located below the main radiator. It reduces the engine oil temperature throughout the crankcase.

To boost power at low-to-mid-range engine speeds, the electronic throttle bodies are tapered to 43mm bores.

They are part of a new intake pipe (intake tube, throttle body, and air cleaner funnel), 12mm longer than the previous generation Hayabusa.

Four primary fuel injectors are integrated into the new throttle bodies. They spray fuel directly into the intake tubes. Four additional Suzuki Side Feed Injectors support the throttle body.

These injectors create a fine mist of fuel that reflects off the throttle body. This results in a 2% increase in power and torque in the low-to-mid range.

Two Suzuki Ram Air Direct (SRAD), intake ducts are located in the upper fairing. They route high-pressure, clean air to the cleaner.

This boosts performance linearly with increasing road speeds.
The Suzuki Pulsed Secondary Air Injection system (PAIR), injects fresh air into the exhaust to inflame unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and reduces carbon monoxide (CO).

The new four-into-two-into-one-into-two exhaust system configuration uses a new pipe connecting the #1 and #4 head pipes to help deliver more power and torque at low- to mid-range speeds. A connector pipe connects the #3 and #2 head pipes to provide similar benefits as the previous generation exhaust.

As the bike is used, the color and hue of the exhaust silencers will change. Each rider can add their personal touch to the Hayabusa.

The GSX-R1000-specific techniques were used to redesign the crank cases. They now have new lubrication passages allowing 54% more oil flow and crankshaft durability.

U-shaped cutouts within the bores of cylinders allow crankcase pressure caused by descending pistons to escape to adjacent cylinders, reducing internal pumping pressure and mechanical power loss.

The chrome nitride Physical Vapor Deposition piston ring coating (PVD) is more durable and smoother than traditional chrome plating. It reduces friction and improves sealing to the SCEM-coated cylinder.

The new design of the connecting rods reduces their weight by 3 grams per rod while increasing their rigidity. To minimize vibrations to the engine and rider, a gear-driven balancer shaft can be timed to the crankshaft.

The exhaust camshaft’s lift was increased, and the timing for both camshafts was updated to decrease overlap. This will increase low- to medium-range engine performance. The camshaft’s lobe width has been increased to improve valve train durability and lubrication.

Cam chain tensioner has been redesigned to reduce chain runout. It also features a Teflon coating on the slipper surface to reduce mechanical losses. A curved radiator maintains the engine’s temperature with a dense core design and two ECM-controlled electric fans.

The cooling fan blade pitch has been increased, and the fan shroud is smaller to allow them to spin down while stopped in traffic. This allows for cool airflow to be reduced to the rider. The Hayabusa now has Suzuki’s Ride by Wire Electronic Throttle body system. This provides a natural, light response and linear control similar to a traditional throttle.

The ECM controls the throttle action and can add or improve other functions, such as cruise control, launch control and lift control. New throttle bodies allowed for an increase in the capacity of the air cleaner assembly from 10.3 to 11.5 Liters. This increased the air supply to the engine. The new air cleaner featured a rigid lid and streamlined internal structure, which improved the intake air quality.

The Hayabusa’s SRAD ducts were developed using flow analysis. This new design decreases pressure loss and increases pressurized water flow to the air cleaner. It also contributes to smoother aerodynamics and an exciting intake sound.

The new exhaust system is lighter at 4.5 pounds (2.054 grams) and features newly designed silencers to complement the Hayabusa’s appearance. The silencers have a greater capacity and are tuned to produce a more exciting sound at idle speeds and lower speeds.

To further reduce HC, CO and nitrogen oxide (NOx), the new exhaust features high-flow catalysts in the middle pipe and inside each silencer. For smooth and clean EFI operation, dual O2 sensors provide instantaneous feedback for the ECM.

Driveline:

The Hayabusa’s six-speed, close ratio, and constant-mesh transmission can be shifted conventionally or using the bi-directional quick shift system. The rider can choose between racing-style, traditional, or casual riding clutchless shifting.

Hydraulic clutch activation reduces lever pull and gives the rider an excellent sense of the clutch’s friction area. The crankcase’s oil jets spray lubricating oils on the fourth, fifth and sixth gears to reduce friction and wear.

Redesigned gearshift cam, stopper and end plate for the quick shift system have been added to give riders a smoother and more direct shifting experience. The Hayabusa’s unique RK GB50GSVZ4 drive chains have larger pins and rollers, which make them reliable and quiet.

Hayabusa’s new Suzuki Clutch Assist System(SCAS) clutch delivers a lighter lever pull. SCAS acts as a back-torque-limiting system, allowing smooth downshifts and increasing plate tension during acceleration. This ensures that engine power is transmitted effectively to the rear wheels.

The new crankcase, combined with the six-speed, close-ratio transmission from Hayabusa, has been improved to match the engine’s performance and improve durability. This will simplify the service.

To accommodate the new SCAS-style clutch, the length of the countershaft has been increased. Longer needle bearings have been added to improve durability. To match the change in countershaft, the clutch pushrod length has been increased. To simplify service, a new transmission retainer system was used.

Chassis:

Hayabusa’s twin-spar aluminum frame, swingarm and swingarm are made from aluminum castings and extruded aluminum sections. This gives the Hayabusa the right combination of strength and suppleness to its rigid alloy frame structure.

The KYB Inverted Cartridge Fork has been updated with a revised internal structure that provides more compliance. This will allow the suspension to absorb more shocks from the road, ensuring a smoother ride and optimal grip.

Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC), coating on the fork’s inner tubes of 43mm in diameter, reduces friction and improves reaction to road imperfections.

The shock absorber features threaded spring preload adjustment collars and rebound and compression damping force adjustable.

New seven-spoke cast aluminum alloy wheels in a seven-spoke design provide better grip and feel for the rider while also matching the Hayabusa’s unique styling.

Bridgestone tires feature a new compound and construction that improves grip on wet roads and performance in wet conditions. They also provide more agility all around. The S22 tires provide exceptional straight-line stability, braking grip, and a more thrilling and confidence-building experience.

The Hayabusa uses the Brembo Style front brake discs. These calipers are lighter and more compact than the previous design and can be used on high-performance motorcycles. They increase airflow around brake pads to cool faster and respond immediately. A single-piston brake caliper grabs the rear brake rotor, measuring 260mm.

The handlebars are 12mm closer to the rider, greatly improving comfort and reducing fatigue while touring. It also enhances control. The shift and rear brake levers can be easily adjusted to suit the rider’s preferences.

The Hayabusa’s height has been reduced to 31.5 inches thanks to the new sub-frame and bodywork. The Hayabusa’s style is visually matched by the grab rail, which is reshaped and placed near the rear seat. This makes it easy for passengers to grasp.

The redesigned subframe weighs 1.5 pounds (700g) less than the previous generation. It is made from long rectangular steel tubing to provide ample weight-carrying capability.

The fork features spring preload, rebound and compression damping force adjusters that allow riders to tune their suspension response to their liking.

The KYB rear shock absorber’s internal structure was also redesigned to improve comfort and straight-line stability, just like the fork. The frame has a steering damper that attaches to the lower bracket of the fork bracket.

This damper provides a damping force to reduce unwanted vibration and steering forces. It is tuned to give lighter steering feel at lower speeds. The Hayabusa was co-developed by Suzuki and Bridgestone and came with the Battlax Hypersport S22 tires in 120/70ZR17M/C (58W front) and 190/50ZR17M/C(73W rear).

The Hayabusa gives the rider exceptional control over braking, thanks to the Combined Brake System and the Motion Track Antilock Brake System. (MT-ABS )**.).

Style front brake discs are paired with stainless-steel full floating discs. Their diameter is increased from 310mm up to 320mm. They also have a new hole pattern which further optimizes cooling efficiency.

The floating handlebar mount reduces vibration, and visual changes in the design are consistent with Hayabusa’s top-of-the-line sportbike status. To reduce vibration, the rider’s footrests are mounted with mounting hardware and placed in a sporty yet comfortable relationship with the handlebars.

You can easily change the appearance of the heel guards by adding plastic inserts. Hayabusa’s adjustable clutch and front brake lever are black-anodized and have been carefully designed to help the rider control. They also feature slots at their ends to reduce wind pressure pushing the levers forward.

To allow the passenger to see forward, the rear seat is higher than the front so the rider can view the rider from the side.

An optional single-seat cowl can replace the grab rail and passenger seat. It acts as a lumbar rest for solo rides while adding to the Hayabusa’s performance-related style.
